Sarah Bakewell was born in Bournemouth, England, in 1963. She majored in philosophy at the University of Essex. After graduating, she worked in a factory and then as a curator of ancient-printed books in a London library for ten years. Bakewell currently lives in London, where she teaches creative writing at Kellogg College, Oxford. In 2010, she published the book How to Live: Or A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award as well as the Duff Cooper Prize in the UK. Her book was also selected as one of The Times’ “100 Biographies to love”.
